| Summary, etc. | La question du non-recours préoccupe aujourd’hui les acteurs des politiques soucieux de ne pas atteindre les publics. Ce texte présente les circonstances de son émergence, il y a une trentaine d’années, en lien avec un parcours de recherche. L’objectif n’est pas de présenter une sociohistoire du non-recours comme catégorie d’analyse et d’action. En revanche, ce témoignage montre ce qui peut durablement compter lorsque le métier de sociologue consiste (aussi) à ouvrir le passage à des questions qui peuvent déranger : en particulier, l’engagement dans des hypothèses de recherche fortes, l’effort dans la fabrication des outils nécessaires à l’explication et à la prise en compte des résultats, et le choix d’un langage scientifique sobre et direct. |

| Summary, etc. | The issue of non-take-up and not reaching targeted populations is currently of growing concern to policy makers. This article presents the circumstances of its emergence three decades ago, in parallel with my own research career. The aim is not to present a socio-history of non-take-up as a category of analysis and action. Instead, this testimony shows what can sustainably make a difference when the sociologist’s profession (also) consists in opening the way to potentially uncomfortable questions: in particular, the exploration of strong research hypotheses, the creation of tools required for fruitful exploration and the taking into account of results, and the choice of a sober and direct scientific language. |
