| Summary, etc. | Durant les cinq dernières années de sa vie, la journaliste-écrivain Oriana Fallaci (1929-2006) a publié trois pamphlets fortement islamophobes, et néanmoins largement acclamés en Italie. Ils se sont vendus à des millions d’exemplaires, et ont eu un rôle majeur dans la structuration d’un débat national sur les relations interculturelles et la prétendue non-intégrabilité des musulmans. Comment ce succès populaire a-t-il été possible ? Comment les prises de position antimusulmanes de Fallaci ont-elles acquis une telle légitimité et une telle influence ? Nous répondons ici à ces questions en plusieurs étapes successives. L’introduction inscrit tout d’abord notre propos à l’intersection de la sociologie de l’islamophobie et de la sociologie des intellectuels (et du journalisme). La première partie (1) présente ensuite brièvement La Trilogie, en expliquant pourquoi – même en Italie – l’étude de sa réception a été négligée par les sciences sociales. Tout en les replaçant dans leur contexte économique et politique, les modalités du succès de Fallaci sont alors analysées en abordant notamment (2) les stratégies de l’auteure en termes de construction charismatique progressive et de posture totalisante des différentes positions intellectuelles, à l’origine de sa légitimité publique ; (3) la façon dont la multipositionnalité durable de Fallaci entre différents espaces (journalistique, littéraire, etc.), fondée sur un système de garanties mutuelles entre ceux-ci, et le soutien des médias de masse, a largement déterminé l’accueil favorable qu’ont reçu ses ouvrages ; et enfin (4) comment l’attachement affectif qu’elle suscite chez une grande partie de ses lecteurs contribue au processus de (re)configuration de leurs sentiments antimusulmans. |

| Summary, etc. | Oriana Fallaci’s Islamophobic intellectual magisterium. Origins and modalities of the success achieved by the “Trilogy on Islam and the West” in Italy (2001-2006)In the last five years of her life, the journalist and writer Oriana Fallaci (1929-2006) published three strongly Islamophobic pamphlets, which were widely acclaimed in Italy. They sold millions of copies and played a major role in structuring a national debate on intercultural relations and the supposedly impossible integration of Muslims. How was this popular success achieved? How did Fallaci’s anti-Muslim positions gain such legitimacy and influence? We answer these questions in several successive stages. The introduction situates our analysis at the intersection between the sociology of Islamophobia and the sociology of intellectuals (and journalism). The first section (1) then presents a brief overview of The Trilogy and explains why, even in Italy, the study of its reception has been neglected by the social sciences. While detailing their economic and political contexts, the modalities of Fallaci’s success are next analyzed by considering (2) the author’s strategies in establishing her public legitimacy through a progressive construction of charisma and on a posture totalizing all the different forms of intellectuals’ engagement; (3) the manner in which Fallaci’s enduring multipositionality in different spaces (journalistic, literary, etc.) is based on a system of cross guarantees and the support of mass media, and largely determined the positive reception her books received; and finally (4) how the affective attachment she aroused in many of her readers has contributed to the (re)configuration of their anti-Muslim attitudes. |
