| Summary, etc. | L’objectif de cet article est d’examiner les différents sens possibles du concept de théorie sociale ainsi que les différents arguments pour et contre la théorie sociale en sociologie et en philosophie. La première section propose une définition générale de la théorie sociale en s’interrogeant sur le type d’activité théorique qu’elle désigne. La deuxième section analyse les différents types de rapports possibles entre théorie sociale et théorie sociologique en distinguant théorie ancrée, théorie à portée moyenne et théorie générale. La troisième section examine les différents rapports possibles entre la théorie sociale, la philosophie sociale, l’ontologie sociale et l’épistémologie des sciences sociales. La cartographie ainsi présentée est critique dans la mesure où il s’agit d’examiner les forces et les faiblesses des différentes positions examinées, et elle conduit à défendre une conception adornienne de la théorie sociale. |

| Summary, etc. | This article proposes a survey of the various possible meanings of the idea of social theory, as well as a critical examination of the arguments pro and contra social theory in sociology and philosophy. The first section analyses the type of theorizing that is associated with the various projects of social theory and it articulates a general definition of social theory. The second section considers the distinctions between grounded theory, middle range theory and general theory, in order to clarify the possible meanings of the distinction between social theory and sociological theory. The third section discusses the possible relationships between social theory, social philosophy, social ontology and epistemology of the social sciences. This cartography of the different ways of theorizing the social is critical since it aims at examining the value of the positions pro and contra social theory, and it results in a defense of an Adorno conception of social theory. |
