| Summary, etc. | Cet article analyse la trajectoire éditoriale mouvementée d’Edward Saïd en France. Si l’ouvrage Orientalisme est traduit rapidement par les éditions du Seuil, deux ans après sa parution en anglais, ses autres écrits sont ignorés par les éditeurs français. Aucun de ses ouvrages n’est publié pendant seize ans alors que durant cette même période il publie douze ouvrages en langue anglaise, aussi bien théoriques que politiques. Face à ce silence éditorial, l’étude des archives personnelles d’Edward Saïd souligne paradoxalement un fort investissement de celui-ci auprès des éditeurs français : recours à un agent spécifique, contact personnel avec des éditeurs, envoi de manuscrits. Plusieurs missives montrent qu’Edward Saïd interprète ce silence comme une conséquence de ses engagements politiques en faveur de la Palestine. À partir de l’étude des archives d’Edward Saïd, de celles des maisons d’édition et d’entretiens menés auprès de ses éditeurs, cette étude cherche à rendre compte des conditions d’(im)possibilité de la traduction de cet auteur dans l’espace français mêlant à la fois le contexte intellectuel français, les contraintes économiques pesant sur l’espace éditorial ainsi que l’assignation identitaire subit par Edward Saïd croisant postcolonialisme, critique néolibérale et militant pour la cause palestinienne, le rendant difficilement « classable ». |

| Summary, etc. | This article analyses Edward Saïd’s tumultuous editorial trajectory in France. Even though his Orientalism was swiftly translated by Les éditions du Seuil, only two years after its English release, the author’s other writings have been ignored by French publishers: for the following sixteen years, none of his books were published although during this period he published twelve books in English, both theoretical and political. The study of Edward Saïd’s personal archives however shows that despite the editorial silence he entertained keen negotiations with French publishers as testified by his engaging a literary agent, contacting publishers and shipping manuscripts in person. Several letters show that Edward Saïd interpreted this silence as a consequence of his political commitment to the Palestinian cause. Based on the study of Edward Saïd’s and publishing companies’ archives as well as on interviews conducted with his former publishers, this article uncovers the conditions that made the translation of Saïd’s work impossible in France, that is the French intellectual context, the economic constraints weighing on the editorial world, and the difficulty to “classify” Saïd as an intellectual because of the multiple labels pinned on him. |
