| Summary, etc. | Les transformations et évolutions de l’industrie française ont fait l’objet de nombreuses études ces trente dernières années. La plupart de ces travaux ont permis d’enrichir les connaissances sur les mutations du travail industriel, mais peu d’enquêtes ont été menées auprès de celles et ceux qui ont été chargés de mettre en œuvre ces changements, les patrons. Cet article cherche à saisir ce que les transformations du capitalisme produisent sur un territoire industriel et sur le métier de petit patron. À partir d’une enquête qualitative menée auprès de deux générations de patrons de l’industrie coutelière de la ville de Thiers, est retracée l’histoire de trois entreprises d’un district industriel aux destins différents. À travers ces portraits apparaissent certaines des grandes transformations économiques et sociales de la société française : la contraction du nombre de travailleurs du secteur industriel, l’industrialisation de l’artisanat, la concurrence internationale principalement chinoise, la diffusion de nouveaux modes de management, l’évolution des modes de consommation ou encore la diffusion des normes d’hygiène. |

| Summary, etc. | The changing nature of French industry has been the subject of numerous studies over the past thirty years. Many of these works have helped to improve knowledge around the changes which have taken place within industrial organizations. However, only a few studies have directly examined those who were in charge of implementing these changes, the bosses. This article seeks to study how transformations in contemporary capitalism have changed the work of bosses within large and small industrial firms. Based on a qualitative study, carried out among two generations of bosses from the cutlery industry in the town of Thiers, this paper will seek to trace the history of three companies. The history of these three companies reveals some of the great economic and social transformations of French society; the contraction in the number of workers within the industrial sector, the industrialization of the craft industry, the effects of Chinese international competition, the deployment of new management methods, the evolution of consumption patterns and the spread of reinforced hygiene standards. |
