Summary, etc. | En s'appuyant sur une enquête comparative auprès de managers de la diversité en entreprise dans les régions de New York et de Paris, cet article explore les logiques de réalisme identitaire au sein d'emplois qualifiés. Inspirée du concept de « racial realism » (Skrentny, 2013), cette notion désigne le fait de considérer l'identité sexuée et racialisée comme une compétence professionnelle. Aux États-Unis comme en France, les corps sexués et racialisés des managers de la diversité signalent la saillance de la race et du genre dans la définition gestionnaire de la diversité, au-delà de la vulgate célébrant une infinité de différences. Mais alors qu'aux États-Unis l'identité « minoritaire » (de race, mais aussi de sexe) est perçue comme une qualité professionnelle pour exercer cette fonction, en France au contraire c'est l'identité « majoritaire » (là encore de race et de sexe) qui apparaît comme une ressource. Ce contraste confirme l'importance de placer les corps des travailleurs et des travailleuses au c ur de l'analyse des dispositifs gestionnaires, révélant ici l'influence des problématisations nationales de l'égalité et de la différence sur les appropriations pratiques d'un discours managérial transnational. |

Summary, etc. | Drawing on a comparative study of diversity managers in New York and Paris areas, this article explores how identity realism plays out in managerial jobs. Inspired by the concept of “racial realism” (Skrentny, 2013), the notion of identity realism refers to the practice of considering gender and race as a professional qualification. In both U.S. and French settings, the gendered and racialized bodies of diversity managers signal the salience of race and gender in the corporate framing of diversity, beyond the ubiquitous rhetoric celebrating an infinite array of differences. Yet, while in the U.S. minority identity (being everything but a white male) is valued as a qualifying attribute for the role, in France the majority identity (white masculinity) appears, by contrast, as a professional resource. This contrast confirms the importance of placing professional bodies at the core of analyzing management categories, revealing in this particular case how national framings of equality and difference shape the practical meaning of a transnational corporate discourse. |
