| Summary, etc. | Le roman des origines du mouvement pour l’avortement libre en France fait de la « découverte de la méthode Karman » le déclencheur des mobilisations ouvertes et de l’évolution des pratiques médicales. Cet article démontre que c’est la mise en forme politique de la technique par des entrepreneurs et des entrepreneuses de cause qui a été déterminante. En revenant sur la généalogie de l’aspiration, la première partie relativise l’innovation radicale qu’aurait représenté la « méthode Karman » au début des années 1970. La deuxième contextualise son appropriation et sa promotion par des collectifs de médecins, ce qui répond à des motivations politiques et professionnelles. La dernière partie relate l’histoire méconnue de groupes clandestins, qui montre que l’aspiration s’inscrit dans un processus déjà en cours de mutualisation des savoir-faire abortifs. L’article conclut sur la nécessité de réfléchir à toute l’économie symbolique à l’oeuvre dans la fiction construite par les médecins critiques, la « méthode Karman » étant un élément privilégié de l’appropriation médicale de l’acte. |

| Summary, etc. | The founding narrative of the free abortion movement in France refers to the “discovery of the Karman method” as the trigger for open contestation and for the evolution of medical practices. Instead, this article demonstrates that the political framing of the method by claimmakers was decisive. The first part of the paper explores the genealogy of the vacuum aspiration technique and puts into perspective the radical innovation underlying the “Karman method” in the early 1970s. The second part contextualizes its appropriation and promotion by some groups of physicians for political and professional motives. The last part recounts the little-known history of underground groups, showing that the aspiration technique is part of an already ongoing process of resource-sharing for abortions. The article concludes by analyzing the symbolic economy at work in the fiction created by critical physicians: the “Karman method” is a key element of the medical appropriation of abortion. |
