Summary, etc. | Comprendre la relative rareté des mobilisations contre l’islamophobie requiert d’aller au-delà d’une analyse d’une structure des opportunités politiques défavorable et de saisir à un niveau microsociologique le travail de mobilisation d’acteurs intermédiaires qui cherchent à convertir certains sentiments d’injustice en action collective. Cet article propose une telle investigation à partir d’une enquête localisée dans la ville de Roubaix et le suivi ethnographique de deux acteurs collectifs centraux : les lieux de culte et les associations qui luttent contre la stigmatisation des musulmans. Pour des raisons opposées – la reconnaissance institutionnelle dans un cas, la disqualification dans l’autre – ces acteurs ne parviennent pas ou plus à se constituer en opérateurs efficaces de mobilisation contre l’islamophobie. Alors que les mosquées roubaisiennes se sont fédérées en réaction à une controverse jugée islamophobe, elles ont noué des relations harmonieuses avec les pouvoirs publics – de droite comme de gauche – permettant la construction de plusieurs édifices d’ampleur et une reconnaissance de leur place dans la ville, mais les éloignant de toute logique contestataire. Les associations plus militantes en revanche, si elles ont un temps bénéficié de financements publics, ont vite été attaquées pour leur « communautarisme » supposé, les controverses successives contribuant à leur marginalisation. Les trajectoires de ces collectifs permettent de comprendre la démobilisation constatée sur le terrain en dépit d’une politisation diffuse liée à la stigmatisation croissante des musulmans. |

Summary, etc. | Analyzing the relative scarcity of protest actions against Islamophobia requires going beyond the identification of an unfavorable political opportunity structure and grasping, from a micro-sociological perspective, the mobilization work performed by intermediary actors who seek to convert certain feelings of injustice into collective action. This article proposes such an investigation based on a localized survey in the city of Roubaix and the ethnographic follow-up of two central collective actors : places of worship and associations that fight against the stigmatization of Muslims. For opposite reasons†institutional recognition in one case, disqualification in the other†these actors do not or no longer succeed in constituting themselves as effective operators of mobilization against Islamophobia. While the mosques in Roubaix were federated in reaction to a controversy deemed Islamophobic, they have established harmonious relations with the public authorities†both right and left-wing†allowing the construction of several important buildings and a recognition of their place in the city, but distancing themselves from any contentious dynamics. On the other hand, the more militant associations, although they benefited for a time from public funding, were soon attacked for their supposed “communitarianism,” with successive controversies contributing to their marginalization. These collective trajectories allow to understand the demobilization observed in the field despite a diffuse politicization linked to the stigmatization of Muslims. |
