| Summary, etc. | RésuméCet article interroge le lien entre la matérialité d’une œuvre d’art – son aspect, son état matériel – et la signification qu’on lui attribue. En étudiant les interactions ayant lieu entre conservateurs et restaurateurs, à l’occasion de leur restauration, nous montrons comment la matérialité infléchit le processus d’interprétation. D’une part, les acteurs en présence s’appuient sur la matérialité du tableau pour mettre en cohérence les différents dispositifs d’interprétation disponibles et déterminer collectivement le sens dit « original » de l’œuvre, c’est-à-dire celui qui est le plus fidèle à l’intention de l’artiste. D’autre part, par sa présence, le tableau participe activement à la production de son nouveau sens. |

| Summary, etc. | Interpretation as work: materiality and meaning of an artifactThis article addresses the interpretations of art works, according not to their contents but to their functions. The first function is intellectualization, rather than a sensitive or sensorial relationship to the art work. The second function is valorisation, since the construction of an enigma surrounding the work understates that the latter carries something more than its very materiality. The third function is justification, when the work is submitted to critics which cannot be dismissed by a purely aesthetical argument, then bringing up the “hermeneutic register”. Each of those three possibilities is illustrated by examples taken out of the history of western painting, the history of modem art and the sociology of contemporary art. |

| Summary, etc. | La interpretación como un trabajo : materia-lidady signification de una obra de arteEste artículo aborda el vínculo entre la materialidad de una obra de arte – su aspecto, su estado material – y la significación que se le atribuye. Estudiando las interacciones que existen entre conservadores y restauradores, en el momento de su restauración, mostramos cómo la materialidad influye sobre el proceso de interpretación. Por una parte, los actores presentes se apoyan en la materialidad del cuadro para poner en coherencia los distintos dispositivos de interpretación disponibles y determinar colectivamente el sentido dicho “original” de la obra, es decir el más respetuoso de la intención del artista. Por otra parte, por su presencia física, el cuadro participa activamente en la producción de su nueva significatión. |
