| Summary, etc. | Bien que les relations entre contrôle et technologies de l’information (TI) aient fait l’objet de nombreuses recherches en théorie des organisations et en management des systèmes d’information, les recherches passées se focalisent essentiellement sur des situations de « couplage fort » entre l’activité et sa représentation, offrant une vision réductrice du rôle du contrôlé, souvent considéré comme la victime de pratiques de contrôle disciplinaire. Cet article conceptuel propose une vision renouvelée du contrôle technologique à partir d’une relecture des relations entre contrôle, information et TI. Une analyse de la littérature existante couplée au prisme conceptuel Foucaldien permet d’introduire le pouvoir du contrôlé comme producteur d’informations et d’une représentation nécessaires à l’exercice du contrôle. Cette relecture permet de conceptualiser le rôle du contrôlé dans des situations de « couplage faible » entre l’activité et sa représentation, jusque-là peu étudiées, mais qui tendent à se répandre avec l’évolution récente vers plus de décentralisation et d’interaction entre l’acteur et la technologie. L’article développe l’idée que l’objet sur lequel s’exerce le contrôle n’est ni le subordonné, ni son activité, mais en réalité une représentation technologiquement et socialement construite par ce dernier de son activité. Ce faisant, cette réflexion amène à reconsidérer le rôle des acteurs organisationnels (contrôleur et contrôlé) dans les relations entre contrôle et technologie, et suggère, plus largement, une évolution des dimensions du contrôle, dont les enjeux conceptuels et contributions pratiques sont spécifiés. |

Rethinking the role of the controlled employee in the relation between control, information and ITAlthough the relationships between control and Information Technology (IT) have been largely studied by academic research in organization and information systems management, past research have mainly focused on “strong coupling” situations between the controlled activity and its representation, offering a restricted vision of the role of the controlled, often considered as the victim of disciplinary control practices. This conceptual paper revisits IT-based control thanks to a reinterpretation of the relationship between control, information and IT. Thanks to an in-depth analysis of extant literature, coupled to the use of a conceptual Foucauldian framework, this reflection introduces the power of the subordinate as a producer of the information and representations that are required by the exercise of control. This reinterpretation enables to conceptualize the role of the controlled in “loose coupling” situations, which have been far less studied but which tend to develop as a result of an increase in decentralization and interactions between organizational actors and technology. This paper develops the idea that the object of control is neither the subordinate nor their activity, but in fact a technologically- and socially-built representation by the subordinate of their activity. In doing so, this reflection invites reviewing the role of organizational actors (the controller and the controlled) in relationships between control and technology, and suggests, more broadly, an evolution of the dimensions of control, whose conceptual stakes and practical contributions are specified. |
