Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | While teenage pregnancies remain a global concern, its understanding of it can vary from discipline to discipline. In biomedicine, experts often emphasize the accidental (unwanted) aspect of teenage pregnancies, while stressing the medical complications, including the increased risk of maternal and infant mortality. In other words, teenage pregnancies are reduced to a pathological dimension. The scientific community is not unanimous in its approach to this phenomenon in biomedicine. Indeed, social scientists point out that adolescents are not a homogeneous group: behind each pregnant girl there is a diversity of histories, backgrounds, personalities, and living conditions. Moreover, they have shown that teenage pregnancies depend on social, environmental, and economic factors. Thus, in order to better understand this complex social phenomenon, this paper shows the importance of favoring both biomedical and sociocultural approaches. |
