520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | In the urban capitals of Brazil in the 1950s, a visual culture gradually leaning toward modern ideals spread mostly by Hollywood films—especially regarding the ideas of fashion and glamour—was established. It is in this context, and from a sociology of form that we aim to investigate the forms of appropriation of this visual culture by the Brazilian film industry through “ chanchadas,” which, conversely, adopted a critical and anti-Hollywood stance. By establishing a comparison between the American film Samson and Dalilah (1950) and the Brazilian chanchada Nem Sansão nem Dalila (1954), we demonstrate the mechanisms by which the visual forms of glamour and fashion are not only parodied, but incorporated and reconfigured. |
