Summary, etc. | S’inspirant d’un fait réel, le film El Verdugo du cinéaste espagnol Luis García Berlanga (1963) se livre à la satire d’un bourreau qui incarne la répression à l’époque franquiste, dans une Espagne où le tourisme est une activité prospère et florissante. Le cinéaste oppose à ce titre deux mondes antagonistes : l’univers idyllique des touristes à celui de la féroce dictature espagnole incarnée par José Luis, bourreau récemment promu. Il dépeint ce dernier comme la victime d’un système et non comme le monstre qu’il incarne généralement dans l’imaginaire collectif. Son rêve de voyage va progressivement tourner pour lui à une descente aux Enfers... |

Summary, etc. | Inspired by real events, the film, El Verdugo, by the Spanish filmmaker, Luis García Berlanga (1963), indulges in the satire of an executioner who embodies repression during the Franco era, in a Spain where tourism was a prosperous and flourishing activity. For this reason, the filmmaker confronts two opposing worlds: The idyllic universe of tourists, and the savage Spanish dictatorship embodied by José Luis, a recently promoted executioner. He depicts the latter as the victim of a system and not as the monster he generally symbolizes in the collective imaginary. His dream of travel progressively turns into a descent into Hell. . . |
