| Summary, etc. | RésuméGeorges Bataille s’est interrogé à plusieurs reprises sur la question de la peine de mort chez Sade. Pourquoi le marquis est-il contre la peine capitale ? Une telle prise de position s’éclaire certes compte tenu de l’activité et des choix politiques de Sade dans le contexte de la Terreur, mais elle ne peut pleinement se comprendre qu’en considération du statut que revêt pour lui la douleur d’un autre corps. Ce statut est aussi intime que celui de la douleur du corps propre et cela explique l’affinité que le meurtre revêt aux yeux de Sade avec un état extatique. On montrera comment c’est d’ailleurs à partir d’une éthique du désir que Sade résiste par son écriture à l’exercice froid de la peine de mort promu au nom de la loi par Robespierre. |

| Summary, etc. | George Bataille repeatedly wondered why Sade was opposed to the death penalty. Following Bataille, I shall approach the issue focussing on Sade’s writing practice and on the political background (the Terror led by Robespierre). Actually, Sade’s position can only be approached through an understanding of the status he grants to the suffering of another body. This status is just as intimate as the suffering of one’s own body and this explains the similitude between murder and ecstasy. We shall show how, through an ethics of desire, Sade opposes his writing practice to the practice of the death penalty promoted by Robespierre. |
