Summary, etc. |

Summary, etc. | Madness in Hollywood : Mankiewicz, Forman, ScorseseHollywood films tend to dramatize madness in terms of a conflict between two types of therapy based, on the one hand, on an often caricatural type of talking cure and, on the other, on an organic, neuro-surgical approach leading to confinement and furor sanandi. The last film by Scorsese, Shutter Island, resumes this opposition with both ambiguity and originality. Comparing this film with previous ones, such as Suddenly, Last Summer by Mankiewicz (1959) and One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Forman (1975), we question the evolution of the representation of madness in films and contemporary discourses. Referring to Lacan’s teaching on the relation of the letter to « jouissance », we can underscore the structure which enables us to understand the object of this repetition in films. |
