Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | In psychoanalysis, the symptomatic dimension of insomnia cannot be taken for granted. Its hidden and unconscious significance must be investigated for insomnia challenges all kinds of immediate interpretation. What does it tell us then? The hypothesis of a writing of insomnia in the formations of the unconscious allows us to broach this issue in the joint fields of clinical approach and literature. Starting from a short story by Alice Munro, entitled “Night” edited in her last volume (Dear Life, 2012), we have analyzed the relationship between a teenager’s insomnia and the question of castration vis-à-vis her father. “Night” equally includes references to the tale by Hoffmann entitled “The Sandman” (Night Pieces, 1817), commented by Freud (‘The Uncanny’, 1919), and we have consequently interrogated the link between insomnia and the Freudian notion of the uncanny. |
