| Summary, etc. | Suivant le conseil de Franz Kaltenbeck de ne pas lire les textes littéraires comme preuve de la pathologie de l’auteur ou des protagonistes – un roman n’est pas un patient –, je voudrais tenter d’étudier ce que nous enseigne le roman de Philip Roth, Le rabaissement, sur l’importance de l’ acting out et du passage à l’acte dans la mélancolie.Roth décrit le déclin d’un acteur nommé Axler qui perd sa capacité à mettre en scène, à (se) représenter, à élaborer symboliquement les traumatismes de sa vie, notamment le vieillissement et le non-rapport sexuel. Après une crise mélancolique grave, il développe et réalise un fantasme sexuel pour lutter contre l’aspiration à la mort. Mais cette tentative d’élaboration d’un symptôme échoue et, après une phase d’acting out, le sujet passe à l’acte suicidaire. | Summary, etc. | Since a novel is not a patient, Franz Kaltenbeck advised not to look for signs of the author’s nor of the character’s pathology in literary texts. Likewise, I would like to study what Roth’s novel, The Humbling, teaches us about the importance of acting out and of the passage to the act in melancholia. Roth depicts the decline of a stage actor, Axler who suddenly loses his capacity to dramatize, to stage, to set himself up and to symbolically elaborate the traumas of his life, particularly his ageing and the impossibility of sexual relationship. After a severe melancholy episode, he elaborates and enacts a sexual fantasy in order to combat a death drive. But he fails and after a phase of acting out, the character commits suicide. The humbling dramatizes the transformation of the subject into an object a, the leftover resulting from symbolization. |
