Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The essay focuses on the anti-migrant narrative raised during the Covid-19 pandemic, with particular reference to the Italian experience. Articles from two of the most widely read on-line national newspapers are examined, between February 2019 and March 2021. The analysis aims to verify how health emergency practices relatissng to social distancing and lockdown have affected the discursive othering of migrants. The latter, in particular, being mobile, in a moment of general immobility, crossing borders, are narrated both as a physical threat - as a menace to collective health - but also as a symbolic one - as they are perceived as not adapting to the alleged values of a society in crisis. Particular attention is, then, paid to articles linking coronavirus and migration, trying to highlight narrative articulations and possible discursive references to traditional anti-migrant rhetoric. |
