| Summary, etc. | Le texte dépeint les changements récents observables dans les villes sud-africaines en s’appuyant sur le cas de Durban. Les processus encourageants de déracialisation de la société et de l’espace sont soulignés, mais ce qui est surtout mis en relief est la continuité avec le passé, le changement par stratification plus que par transformation. La ville sud-africaine ne peut plus être comprise seulement en fonction des politiques de l’apartheid ; c’est un temps plus long qu’il faut considérer, celui des processus liés aux évolutions du système capitaliste que le gouvernement de l’ANC ne contrôle pas, voire ne cherche pas à contrôler. |

| Summary, etc. | Are South African cities still post-apartheid cities ? Reflections from the case of Durban This paper addresses continuity and change in South African cities, using the example of Durban. Continuity is the norm in understanding urban history with change as a series of accretions and as layering. A series of changes is highlighted, which fit into what the deracialised growth path allows and encourages. Thus far the ANC government has shown little capacity or desire to discipline capital along the lines suggested for post-apartheid reconstruction. Larger changes are thus limited by the predilections and established discourses of the business world and the absence of more dynamic and structured public intervention. |

Elementos de reflexión a partir del caso de Durban El texto describe los cambios recientes observables en las ciudades sudafricanas apoyándose en el caso de Durban. Destacamos los procesos alentadores de “desracialización” de la sociedad y del espacio, pero lo que es sobretodo sub-rayado es la continuidad con el pasado, el cambio por estratificación mas que su transformación. La ciudad sudafricana ya no puede ser comprendida solamente en función de las políticas del apartheid ; es necesario considerar un tiempo más largo, el de los procesos ligados a las evoluciones del sistema capitalista que el gobierno del ANC no controla y que incluso tampoco busca controlar. |
