| Summary, etc. | En Côte d’Ivoire, depuis la fin des années 1990, les cultures de rente sont en crise tandis que l’urbanisation accentue la demande pour les cultures vivrières. Cet article analyse si les revenus issus de la production de tomates, en plein essor dans le Centre-Est de la Côte d’Ivoire, permettent l’autonomie sociale et économique des producteurs qui la pratiquent. L’argumentaire s’appuie sur une combinaison d’entretiens approfondis répétés et d’enquêtes sur un échantillon raisonné de producteurs, portant sur leur trajectoire, leurs activités et leurs résultats économiques, menées en 1999 et 2000. L’article montre que le lieu d’origine et surtout l’insertion sociale des producteurs dans le village conditionnent en grande partie leur accès aux terres et à la main-d’œuvre, et leur garantissent une plus grande autonomie vis-à-vis des commerçants. Le développement de la culture de la tomate s’inscrit dans le cadre des rapports de pouvoir de l’économie de plantation tout en suscitant quelques recompositions dans l’accès au foncier et au travail. |

| Summary, etc. | The dominant and the dominated in a plantation economy : the case of tomato producers in the Center-East of Ivory Coast In Ivory Coast, the cash crop sector is going through a crisis. At the same time the urban growth increases the demand for food crops. Tomato production and sale to urban markets is expanding in the Centre-East of Ivory Coast. This paper appraises whether the incomes generated by tomato enable the social and economic autonomy of farmers who are traditionally marginalised in favour of the owners of plantations. In-depth interviews as well as surveys on a representative sample of farmers were used to get information on the history of the farm, access to resources and markets, the activities performed, and the economic results. The place of origin together with the way farmers are socially integrated in the village bear a strong influence on their access to land, labour and market. The natives, i.e. the people who were born in the villages they live in, as well as the immigrants from Ivory Coast or neighbouring countries, who have been living in the village for a long time, use their network of relationships to gain access to land. They are ready to invest time and money in the growing of tomato. The development of tomato production has taken place together with a change in the access to land and labour, which exemplify more diversified types, but is more precarious. Social arrangements inherited from the economy of plantation have adapted to the growing demand for land and to the expanding food cash crops. The development of tomato is thus taking place in the frame of the power relations of the economy of plantation despite some changes in the access to land and labour. |

| Summary, etc. | Dominantes y dominados en la economía de plantación en el centro-este de Costa de Marfil. El caso de los productores de tomate (1990-2000) En Costa de Marfil, desde fines de los años 1990, los cultivos de renta están en crisis mientras que la urbanización acentúa su demanda. Nos preguntamos en este artículo si los ingresos que resultan de la producción de tomate, en pleno desarrollo en el centro-este de Costa de Marfil, permiten la autonomía social y económica de los productores que la practican. El argumente se basa en una combinación de entrevistas repetidas y de encuestas aplicadas a una muestra de productores, sobre sus trayectorias, sus actividades y sus resultados económicos, en 1999 y 2000. El artículo muestra que el lugar de origen y sobre todo la inserción social de los productores en sus pueblos, condicionan en gran medida su acceso a las tierras y a la mano de obra y les garantizan una mayor autonomía en relación con los comerciantes. El desarrollo del cultivo del tomate se inscribe en el marco de las relaciones de poder de la economía de plantación, pero suscita, a la vez, algunas recomposiciones en el acceso a la tierra y al trabajo. |
