| Summary, etc. | À partir du cas de l’alpinisme britannique et français, cet article se propose de réfléchir à la manière dont on peut situer historiquement l’apparition de discours vocationnels. La vocation, dans le cas de l’alpinisme, désigne un engagement corps et âme au sens fort du terme, un engagement qui vient rendre supportables des coûts importants et qui est propre à l’élite de l’alpinisme, c’est-à-dire aux « grands alpinistes ». Elle s’exprime notamment dans les récits autobiographiques des alpinistes, qui constituent en ce sens un matériau intéressant. La genèse historique de la vocation doit se comprendre en rapport avec l’imposition d’une conception spécifique de l’excellence valorisant l’engagement. Dans ce cadre, l’alpinisme gagne à être analysé comme un « jeu sérieux » ( deep play). |

| Summary, etc. | Using the cases of French and British mountaineering, this article reflects on how to situate historically the moment when vocational discourses have first been produced. In mountaineering, vocation corresponds to a strong « body and soul » commitment, which makes very high costs bearable and which characterizes the sporting elite of mountaineering. It is expressed for instance in mountaineers’ autobiographical writings, an interesting material for investigation. The historical genesis of vocation has to be understood in relation to a specific conception of mountaineering excellence which emphasizes commitment. In this context, the concept of « deep play » is helpful to apprehend mountaineering. |
