| Summary, etc. | Cet article vise à décrire brièvement ce que l’on entend par «l’ère des migrations» et quelles sont les conséquences de ce phénomène pour l’étude du vieillissement et de la vieillesse. Il s’agit en effet d’un thème auquel encore peu de chercheurs européens en gérontologie sociale paraissent s’intéresser à ce jour. Des exemples tirés de travaux portant sur les relations intergénérationnelles et les migrants âgés, ainsi que d’analyses cherchant à mieux appréhender la perception du bien-vieillir ou de la qualité de vie par les migrants eux-mêmes, montrent que le lancement de ce qui semble s’apparenter à des travaux de recherche uniquement intéressants sur le plan empirique pourrait en réalité se révéler très riche du point de vue théorique. En bref, cet article avance que les gérontologues gagneraient beaucoup à élargir leur champ d’investigation pour s’intéresser aux aspects culturels sensibles au parcours des migrants. |

| Summary, etc. | THE AGE OF MIGRATION What Does it Mean and Why Should European Social Gerontologists Care? This article aims to shed light on what migration and ethic relations researchers call “the age of migration” in order to delineate some of the theoretical and empirical opportunities that this new state of affairs poses to the field of social gerontology. Hereby is a brief presentation of what “the age of migration” means and what the implications of this phenomenon are for the study of aging and old age since this is an area with which not many European social gerontologists seem familiar. Through empirical observations made through studies of older migrants’ successful aging, quality of life and intergenerational relationships, it will be argued that launching what might–at first glance– seem like solely empirically-interesting research could in fact turn out to be theoretically-profuse. This article argues, in short, that much could be gained if we were to expand our gerontological imagination through culture-relevant studies that are sensitive to what is specific to the migratory life course. |
