| Summary, etc. | RésuméBien qu’il soit largement reconnu que les économies occidentales ont enregistré une très forte amélioration des conditions de survie lors des deux derniers siècles, aucun consensus n’existe sur la manière d’intégrer ces évolutions dans un indicateur agrégé du bien-être. En effet, l’indicateur agrégé le plus répandu – l’Indice de Développement Humain des Nations Unies – est largement contesté, au nom de la nature arbitraire des pondérations sur lesquelles il repose. Le présent article introduit un indicateur alternatif – une mesure de la consommation « ajustée » pour les variations de longévité – et montre, à l’aide de diverses illustrations, la plus-value apportée par cet indicateur pour la mesure des conditions de vie dans l’espace et dans le temps. Divers problèmes méthodologiques liés à la construction de cet indicateur sont également évoqués, qui sont autant de défis pour les recherches futures dans ce domaine. |

| Summary, etc. | Whereas it is widely acknowledged that Western economies exhibited a very strong improvement of survival conditions during the last two centuries, no consensus exists on how those changes should be incorporated into an aggregated indicator of standards of living. Actually, the most widespread indicator – the United Nations’ Human Development Index – has been largely criticized, on the grounds of the arbitrary nature of the weights on which it relies. The present paper introduces an alternative indicator – a longevity-adjusted measure of consumption – and shows, with diverse applications, the extra-value brought by that indicator for the measurement of standards of living in space and time. Various methodological issues raised by the construction of that indicator are also examined, which constitute challenges for future research. Classification JEL – I12, I31, J11, J17, N30. |
