| Summary, etc. | Le solde migratoire international est et restera, sur la base des projections du Bureau fédéral du Plan et de Statbel, une composante importante de la croissance de la population en Belgique. En outre, la structure d’âge spécifique des migrants, majoritairement âgés de 18 à 66 ans, influence l’économie et en particulier le marché du travail. Cet aspect est abordé au travers de l’impact de la migration internationale sur la croissance économique potentielle à long terme. L’analyse d’impact est effectuée à l’aide d’un scénario alternatif de moindre solde migratoire où la population d’âge actif est réduite de 2,2 % en 2060 en comparaison avec le scénario de référence. Cet effet sur la population d’âge actif mène à une baisse de même ampleur de l’emploi, et par conséquent une baisse de 2,2 % du PIB potentiel en 2060. À titre illustratif, cette baisse de la croissance potentielle relève le coût budgétaire du vieillissement de 0,5 point de pourcentage du PIB entre 2016 et 2060. Au fil des ans, cette – a priori – faible augmentation du coût budgétaire du vieillissement alourdit davantage une dette publique déjà très importante. |

| Summary, etc. | International migration: for potential long term growth?International net migration is an important factor of Belgium’s population growth, and it will remain so according to the projections of the Federal Planning Bureau and Statbel. Moreover, the specific age structure of the migrants (mostly aged between 18 and 66 years) influences the economy and in particular the labor market. This aspect is addressed through the impact of international net migration on long-term potential economic growth. The impact analysis is carried out by means of an alternative scenario of lower net migration that implies a reduction of the active age population by 2.2% in 2060 in comparison with the reference scenario. This effect on the active age population leads to a decrease of employment of the same magnitude, and therefore a reduction of 2.2% of the potential GDP in 2060. For illustrative purposes, this decline in potential growth increases the budgetary cost of aging by 0.5 percentage points of GDP between 2016 and 2060. Over the years, this theoretically low increase of the budgetary cost of aging further increases what was already a very significant level of public debt. Codes JEL : J11 |
