| Summary, etc. | Cet article se propose d’ajouter un argument à la dés-homogénéisation des contributions de Walras et Pareto, en montrant que, même ce qui reste considéré comme le point commun par excellence entre Walras et Pareto – leurs instruments analytiques permettant une représentation mathématique de l’équilibre économique général – n’a pas le même statut. Walras et Pareto revendiquent tous deux la pertinence des mathématiques pour faire progresser la science économique, mais leur interprétation épistémologique du rôle des mathématiques en économie est radicalement différente, voire contradictoire. L’article montre que les mathématiques sont articulées à une forme de déterminisme chez Walras, tandis qu’elles permettent la liberté individuelle chez Pareto. Cette opposition entre liberté et déterminisme est rattachée à celle qui distingue les mathématiques comme langage de la Nature (chez Walras) aux mathématiques comme outil au service de la science (chez Pareto). |

| Summary, etc. | The article suggests a new argument to de-homogenize Walras’and Pareto’s contributions, showing that even the common analytical instrument used for the mathematical representation of general equilibrium doesn’t have the same status. Both consider mathematics as relevant in economics, but their epistemological interpretation of it is different, and sometimes even contradictory. The paper shows that mathematics are linked to a form of determinism in Walras, whereas they are a tool to promote individual freedom in Pareto. This opposition is then connected to the opposition between mathematics as language of Nature (in Walras) and mathematics as a tool for science (in Pareto). Code JEL : B13, B16, B31, B41 |
