| Summary, etc. | Cet article revient en détail sur la critique du libéralisme de Friedrich Hayek délivrée par Raymond Aron, sur une période qui court des années 1940 au début des années 1980. A partir d’une relecture croisée des principaux textes de ces deux philosophes du second xxe siècle, il cherche à montrer que leurs oppositions – sur la place laissée aux libertés économiques, sur la définition même du concept de liberté et sur la manière d’envisager la démocratie – révèlent l’existence de deux voies profondément divergentes au sein du néolibéralisme contemporain : l’une qui se fonde sur un attachement primordial au marché et qui s’accompagne d’une méfiance prononcée à l’égard du régime démocratique ; l’autre qui se construit à l’inverse sur la base d’une confiance en la démocratie, conçue comme point d’aboutissement du libéralisme, et qui conduit à ne pas absolutiser le marché. Un réexamen de cette opposition peut ainsi permettre de sortir d’une vision étriquée et caricaturale du néolibéralisme, qui le réduit abusivement à une fermeture de l’espace des possibles politiques. |

| Summary, etc. | This paper studies the critique of Friedrich Hayek’s liberalism delivered by Raymond Aron, on a period that runs from the 1940s to the early 1980s. By a cross rereading of the main texts of these two twentieth century philosophers, it tries to show that their oppositions —on the economic freedom’s place, on the definition of freedom and on the conception of democracy—reveal the existence of two deeply divergent paths within the contemporary neo-liberalism : one that is based on a market’s obsession and which is accompanied by a pronounced distrust towards democracy ; the other that is on the contrary built on a trust in democracy, considered as the liberalism’s endpoint, which leads to not absolutize the market. Reconsider this opposition may allow to move away from a narrow and caricatural perception of neo-liberalism, which reduces it to a locking of political possibilities.
