| Summary, etc. | Cette construction artificielle qu’est la carte permet de faire subir au texte un proces~sus de focalisation et d’abstraction, qui en met en relief les structures sous-jacentes. La modélisation, pour abstraite qu’elle soit, produit des effets fort concrets : elle révèle dans l’espace des récits (les récits villageois de Mary Mitford, de Berthold Auerbach et John Galt) l’inscription des mentalités, des modes de relations caractéristiques d’une société, et leur évolution. Les cartes apparemment géographiques des scènes où se déroulent les récits deviennent ainsi des diagrammes de forces, dévoilant l’impact, dans la matérialité des espaces représentés, des grandes transformations sociales, à commencer par celles liées à la constitution d’un espace national perturbant les existences à l’échelle locale. |

| Summary, etc. | As artificial constructs, maps take texts through a process of reduction and abstraction which in turn brings out their hidden, underlying structures. Abstract though it may be, this modelization bears concrete consequences as it places the literary field literally under our eyes while highlighting the way attitudes and relationships are inscribed within narrative space (in Mary Mitfod, Berthold Auerbach and John Galt’s village stories for instance). Far from being mere geographic representations of a general backdrop, these models appear to be diagrams of forces, shaped by the overall changes brought about in ordinary lives, at the local level, by the delineation of a national space. |
