| Summary, etc. | Cet article propose une typologie des PME fondée sur leurs comportements en termes de développement durable et de responsabilité sociale (RSE). Cette typologie repose sur la mesure de l’engagement de pratiques durables et du niveau d’orientation entrepreneuriale des PME dans quelque 800 PME françaises et québécoises. Elle prend la forme d’une matrice bidimensionnelle, la « boussole de la durabilité » qui distingue quatre profils d’entreprises. La cohérence de ces profils avec les motivations à l’engagement de pratiques durables déclarées par les dirigeants a été validée. Les intérêts pratiques de cette boussole sont divers. Elle peut être utilisée comme un outil de comparaison pour les PME qui souhaitent comprendre leur profil RSE et les pratiques afférentes qui pourraient le renforcer. Elle peut également aider les décideurs publics à ajuster leurs politiques par une meilleure connaissance de la diversité et des besoins particuliers des PME en matière de RSE et de développement durable. |

| Summary, etc. | This paper proposes a typology of SMEs in terms of sustainable behaviours, based on scales that take into account the extent to which SMEs use sustainable practices in their operations and their level of entrepreneurial orientation. The scales are tested on approximately 800 SMEs in two countries. The results of the analysis provide a two by two matrix, the Sustainability Compass, along the axes of Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) and Engagement in Sustainable Practices (ESP). The four profiles derived from the analyses are then tested for coherence with theoretical motivational profiles, that is the reasons that draw SMEs to get involved in sustainable practices. The Sustainability Compass has practical implications. It may be used as a benchmarking tool for SMEs willing to understand their CSR profile and the underlying practices that could strengthen it. It could also help public policy makers to adjust their responses to SMEs by acknowledging their heterogeneity and their particular needs and expectations. |
