| Summary, etc. | RésuméLe problème de l’image du corps est d’abord envisagé d’un point de vue historique, en faisant la part des théories qui ont permis de passer progressivement d’un « sens musculaire » purement sensoriel aux abstractions de plus en plus éloignées de la sensorialité que sont le schéma corporel puis l’image du corps. Une seconde partie est consacrée aux transformations expérimentales de l’image du corps, qui démontrent sa plasticité et sa capacité d’adaptation à des situations nouvelles. Enfin, la troisième partie traite de l’image de soi, dont l’image du corps est une des composantes, et qui permet de se sentir soi, propriétaire d’un corps et auteur d’actions. |

| Summary, etc. | From the body image to the sense of selfThe body image problem is first considered from a historical perspective. A review of theories which have lead from the concept of a purely sensory origin of the perception of the body based on the muscular sense, to the more abstract concept of a body schema, is presented. The second part deals with laboratory experiments aiming at manipulating the body schema. These experiments demonstrate its high degree of plasticity and its ability to adapt to novel situations. Finally, the third part of the paper discusses how the concept of body image merges as a component of the sense of the self. |
