| Summary, etc. | Schopenhauer, Darwin : deux figures inspiratrices à la fin du XIXe siècle qui ont largement prévalu dans leur vision de la nature, de l’origine et du devenir de l’humanité, sur fond de rupture épistémologique, de pessimisme et de mise à mal du progressisme scientifique. Deux penseurs qui ont bousculé en leur temps les illusions les plus enracinées sur l’ordre, la nécessité, le travail de la raison, le temps enfin. Si une telle rencontre, loin d’éveiller la suspicion, semble parfaitement accréditée dans les années 1890, il nous a semblé louable d’examiner ce pont jeté entre philosophie et biologie, d’interroger un tel transfert, typique du XIXe siècle, à une vision du monde marquée par les sciences du vivant. Et quel fut le legs imaginaire et imaginé pour les écrivains fin de siècle. |

Two thinkers who in their time had disrupted the most entrenched illusions regarding order, necessity, reason, and time even. Since their meeting, far from being regarded with suspicion, seems completely logical in the 1890s, we have judged it interesting to examine the bridge thus built between philosophy and biology, and explore the nature of such a transfer, typical of the 19th century, to a world-view deeply influenced by the biological sciences, as well as its legacy, imaginary and imagined, among the writers of the end of the century. |
