| Summary, etc. | La présente étude s’attache à éclairer un paradoxe : les romanciers naturalistes n’ont cessé de s’élever contre la représentation du suicide dans la littérature romantique ; leurs écrits théoriques (préfaces, essais, chroniques) dénoncent la facilité de cliché ; ils ne se sont cependant pas privés de l’employer à leur tour, en proposant un traitement ironique. Madame Bovary offrait à ce titre à la fois un alibi et un modèle. La question du suicide qui requérait l’attention des médecins et psychiatres contemporains se posait en tout cas pour les romanciers du dernier tiers du siècle avant tout sur le plan esthétique. |

| Summary, etc. | This study purports to bring light upon a paradox : the naturalist novelists never let up their opposition to the representation of suicide in romantic literature ; their theoretical writings (prefaces, essays, chronicles) condemn the easy recourse to this cliché ; and yet they did not refrain from using it in their turn, treating it with irony. Madame Bovary constitutes from this point of view both an alibi and a model. At any rate, the issue of suicide, which was catching the attention of contemporary doctors and psychiatrists, was for the novelists of the last third of the century essentially an aesthetic one. |
