| Summary, etc. | A partir d’une lecture de trois textes de Sarah Orne Jewett, écrivain de Nouvelle-Angleterre (1849-1909), cet essai entend démontrer qu’il ne suffit pas de lire le régionalisme américain à l’aune du local, mais qu’une nouvelle échelle d’analyse s’impose, tant au plan géographique que géo-politique, temporel que socio-sexuel. En traquant l’héritage des Vikings et des Normands chez ses personnages de vieux garçons ou de femmes célibataires, à l’heure où les Etats-Unis entrent dans un nouvel âge impérialiste, les récits de Jewett contribuent à renforcer l’idée d’une parenté entre la Nouvelle-Angleterre, la Grande-Bretagne, la France et la Scandinavie. En façonnant ainsi un espace habitable par ces cosmopolites blancs et célibataires, ces textes régionalistes participent à la construction d’une culture transhistorique, transatlantique et racialisée. |

| Summary, etc. | This essay considers how US regionalist writer Sarah Orne Jewett represented New England’s relationship to the Viking-Norman legacy in three works: The Story of the Normans (1887), “The King of Folly Island” (1888), and The Country of the Pointed Firs (1896). In so doing, this essay advocates for a scaling up of how we read regionalism especially along temporal, geographical, socio-sexual, and geopolitical lines. Jewett’s consistent linking of New Englanders, especially white unmarried women and confirmed bachelors, to medieval Vikings and Normans, helped consolidate the notion of kinship between New England, Great Britain, France, and Scandinavia in an age of empire. Jewett’s writings, in fashioning a space for unmarried, cosmopolitan white people in an imagined Anglo-European bloc, performed complex transhistorical, transatlantic racialized work. |
