| Summary, etc. | Cette étude se propose d’examiner une pratique liée, dans ses formes les plus banales, à la transition funéraire et aux transformations du cimetière au xixe siècle en France : l’exhumation. Elle consiste à exhumer un corps enterré dans une tombe temporaire pour le ré-inhumer dans une concession familiale, acquise entre-temps et dotée d’un monument.Cette opération oblige réglementairement à une confrontation a priori pénible entre le cadavre et les proches du défunt, dont la présence est indispensable. Est-il possible de faire de l’exhumation ordinaire une scène touchante, qui s’accorde avec la mélancolie du cimetière mise à la mode par les romantiques, et de transcender sa trivialité ? L’examen de deux types de récits d’exhumation, l’un extrait d’un des nombreux guides pour les visiteurs de cimetières, l’autre des brochures en faveur de l’embaumement, montre que cette mise en récit est possible, à condition de porter en elle une dimension édifiante, ou de nourrir un argumentaire publicitaire construit au plus près des nouvelles sensibilités. |

| Summary, etc. | This paper proposes to examine a practice linked, in its most common forms, to the funerary transition and transformations of cemeteries in 19th century France: exhumation. This consists in exhuming a body buried in a temporary grave in order to re-inter it in a family grave, that has in the meantime been purchased and endowed with a monument.Regulations require the a priori painful confrontation between the corpse and the kin of the deceased, whose presence is necessary. Is it possible to turn ordinary exhumations into touching scenes, in keeping with the melancholy of the cemetery as fashioned by the Romantics, and to transcend their triviality? An examination of two types of exhumation stories, one taken from one of the many guides for visitors to cemeteries, the other from brochures promoting embalming, shows that this kind of storytelling is possible, provided that it has an edifying dimension, or that it provides fodder for a promotional argument closely attuned to the new sensibilities. |
