| Summary, etc. | La scène de valse agit comme un moment charnière où le jeune protagoniste se trouve au seuil de l’âge adulte, dans notre corpus de dix romans allemands, français et anglais, publiés entre 1771 et 1857. Pour les garçons en quête d’eux-mêmes, la valse permet d’atteindre un état onirique dans lequel ils se sentent libérés des contraintes sociales et capables de posséder une jeune fille. En revanche, chez les jeunes filles, la première valse marque souvent la fin de leur innocence. Elles se trouvent parfois empêchées dans la prise fermée, accablées par le vertige que provoque le tournoiement. Nous nous intéresserons donc à la différence entre les descriptions de la valse à partir de la perspective masculine et celles qui se focalisent sur la perspective féminine afin de nous interroger sur la manière dont la découverte de la sexualité, à travers la valse, peut mettre fin à la jeunesse. |

| Summary, etc. | In this corpus of ten German, French and English novels published between 1771 and 1857, the waltz scene functions as a turning point before adulthood for the young protagonist. For boys in search of their identity, waltzing represents a moment when they can attain a dreamlike state in which they feel free of social constraints and capable of possessing a young woman. By contrast, the first waltz is for girls often the sign of lost innocence. They are at times constrained by the hold the waltz implies on them, and crushed by the vertigo of fast turns. Thus, we will focalise on descriptions of the waltz from a masculine perspective, and on those focalised from a feminine perspective, in order to question the way the discovery of sexuality, through the waltz, can put an end to youth. |
