| Summary, etc. | Les relations entre le royaume de Chypre et le sultanat mamelouk au XVe siècle sont marquées par des hostilités permanentes : des épisodes de pillage et de course d’un côté et des représailles de l’autre côté. Ce sont autant de menaces qui ont pesé sur les relations commerciales entre l’Orient et l’Occident. Mais il est important de signaler que les contacts diplomatiques et les échanges commerciaux entre les deux voisins n’ont jamais été interrompus. En imposant aux Chypriotes des relations de suzeraineté après 1426, les mamelouks réussissent à établir une stabilité relative dans la Méditerranée orientale. Une situation qui permettra aux républiques maritimes, en particulier à Venise, de dominer le commerce du Levant et d’annexer l’île de Chypre en 1489. |

| Summary, etc. | Perduring hostility characterised the relationships between the Kingdom of Cyprus and the Mameluk Sultanate in the 15th century : plundering and pirating ventures were invariably followed by reprisals. Such recurring violence handicapped trade relationships between East and West. Yet it ought to be noted that trade and diplomatic contacts between these two neighbouring nations were never interrupted. When they imposed their suzerainty onto Cypriots after 1426, the Mameluks managed to restore a relative stability in the Eastern Mediterranean. This new situation made it possible for Venice, among other maritime republics, to dominate trade in the Levant and to take over the island of Cyprus in 1489. |
