| Summary, etc. | Après une mise au point rapide sur la manière dont s’organise la matière épique de Garin le Loherain et de Gerbert de Metz, un résumé circonstancié de la première série d’actions guerrières de Garin le Loherain mène le lecteur jusqu’au moment précis de la mort du duc Bégon de Belin, assassiné dans les bois de Lens. En quelques vers, le duc, touché à mort, se met en règle avec ses devoirs de chrétien et, dans la solitude et l’urgence, s’administre une sorte de communion à l’aide de trois brins d’herbe. L’examen précis de ces quelques vers, à travers le foisonnement des variantes fournies par une vingtaine de témoins manuscrits, permet de préciser la nature de ce geste lui-même (qui se répètera lors d’un meurtre ultérieur) et de le confronter aux jugements de théologiens des XIIe et XIIIe siècles. Sont regroupés en annexe les témoignages, pour cet épisode, des trois proses des Loherains, ainsi qu’une vingtaine d’extraits épiques ou romanesques qui font état d’une pratique religieuse d’urgence du même ordre que celle qu’interroge plus particulièrement cet article. |

| Summary, etc. | Trois fuelles d’erbe a pris entre ses piez. Inquiry into Mort Begon in Garin le Loherain. After a brief survey of how the epic material is structured in Garin le Loherain and in Gerbert de Metz, a detailed summary of the first series of military exploits in Garin le Loherain takes readers to the point when Duke Bégon de Belin is murdered in the woods of Lens. Within a few lines the fatally wounded duke settles his duty as a Christian and in his solitude and the urgency of the moment he somehow partakes of the sacrament of the Eucharist with the help of three blades of grass. A close reading of these few lines and of the several variations to be found in some twenty preserved manuscripts makes it possible to be specific about the nature of this gesture (which is repeated in the context of a later murder) and to compare it with the opinions of theologians in the 12th and 13th centuries. An appendix brings together what can be found about this episode in the three prose texts of the Loherains as well as about twenty epic or romance passages in which a similar emergency religious practice is mentioned. |
