520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. The English philosopher, Damaris Masham (née Cudworth (1658-1708)) engaged with several philosophers of her time. In her two published books and in her letters, her interlocutors included both the canonical greats (John Locke, Nicolas Malebranche and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz) and philosophers who, nowadays, are considered “minor” figures (John Norris and Ralph Cudworth), as well as (more indirectly) Pierre Bayle and Mary Astell. In this article I focus chiefly on her interaction with Locke and Cudworth, but I also touch on her response to Malebranche and Norris. I examine her engagement with Locke and Cudworth in order to clarify her philosophical position in relation to theirs, and to question the value of histories of philosophy where the parameters have been fixed without taking account of the contribution of women – in this case, the utility of “empiricism” and “rationalism” as classificatory categories for seventeenth century philosophy.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
