| Summary, etc. | La duplicité du récit jamesien jette, dans le roman de jeunesse Roderick Hudson et dans la longue nouvelle The Lesson of the Master que réunit cet article, un fort soupçon de déloyauté sur les épreuves traditionnellement imposées, notamment dans le domaine amoureux, au héros en devenir du Künstlerbildungsroman des XIXe et XXe siècles, jeune écrivain ou jeune sculpteur ici : rivalité artistico-amoureuse trouble avec une figure paternelle ou fraternelle gémellaire ; perfidie destructrice du rôle joué par les femmes aimées ; manque de fiabilité des appels au sacrifice du mentor quand celui-ci prêche le sacrifice de la vie à l’art et brode sur les thèmes « sacrés » de la supériorité des signes de l’art sur les signes de la réussite sociale ou sur les signes de l’amour. Néanmoins, la complexité des techniques narratives jamesiennes et l’indécidabilité des fins de ces récits empêchent de conclure à coup sûr à l’intention préméditée de duper l’artiste chez ceux qui disaient vouloir sauver son art. |

| Summary, etc. | Roderick Hudson and The Lesson of the Master — To save Art or to fool the Artist? The pattern of the Artist’s Educational Novel put to the test of jamesian duplicity, RLC LXXXV, no. 3, july-sept. 2011, p. 277-288. The duplicity of jamesian narrative techniques in the early novel Roderick Hudson and in the substantial short story The Lesson of the Master, which is the object of this comparison, makes strongly suspicious the traditional challenges which the hero of an Artist’s Educational Novel (a young writer and a young sculptor here) is supposed to run through: equivocal rivalry, both amorous and artistic, with a brotherly or with a fatherly gemellary character; destructive part played by the beloved women; lack of reliability of calls to sacrifice from the Mentor when he preaches the necessity to sacrifice Life to Art and develops “sacred themes” concerning the superiority of signs of Art upon signs of Love and signs of social success. Nevertheless, the complexity of narrative jamesian techniques and the impossibility to decide what is exactly the end of these two stories prevent the reader from definitive conclusions about those who might have intended to fool the Artist asserting to save his Art. |
