| Summary, etc. | Bien qu’il ait lu les écrits de Borel dès la première heure, Cavaillès ne montra d’intérêt pour le calcul des probabilités que lorsqu’il prit connaissance de la notion scientifique de pari. Son incursion dans les travaux de Kolmogorov, von Mises, Wald, Jean Ville, Reichenbach et Borel nous vaut le bel article « Du collectif au pari ». Il y entre dans « le royaume flou des approximations », confronte l’objectivité de l’analyse des fréquences à la subjectivité du pari, rapproche connaître et parier, renouvelle sa réflexion sur l’empirisme et l’idéalisme, sur le partage entre hasard et nécessité, lit Borel avec les yeux de Spinoza et de Hegel, et fait prévaloir contre la sanction du risque par l’échec ou le succès sa signification philosophique encore à trouver. |

| Summary, etc. | Although Cavaillès had read Borel’s writings very early, he only showed an interest for probability theory when he became acquainted with the scientific notion of a wager. His close reading of works by Kolmogorov, von Mises, Wald, Jean Ville, Reichenbach and Borel resulted in the bright essay « Du collectif au pari ». There he enters the « fuzzy kingdom of approximations ». Opposing the objectivity of frequency analysis to the subjectivity of wagering, he brings knowledge and wagering together, also thereby renewing his thinking on empiricism and idealism, and on the divide between chance and necessity, by reading Borel through Spinozian and Hegelian lenses; against the sanction of risk-taking by success or failure he makes its (yet-to-be-determined) philosophical significance prevail. |
