| Summary, etc. | Après avoir illustré, à travers l’article Jak se dělá světová literatura ( Comment fait-on une littérature mondiale), les différentes définitions de la littérature mondiale proposées par Karel Čapek et la manière dont une littérature mineure peut acquérir, selon lui, une dimension mondiale, nous porterons notre attention sur La Guerre des salamandres ( Válka s mloky), pour montrer, d’une part, que la doxa critique concernant l’une des œuvres majeures du canon national tchèque peut être remise en question par une analyse capable de prendre en compte la structure de domination de l’espace littéraire ; de l’autre, que cette œuvre ne se limite pas à refléter mais aussi conteste la configuration des rapports de subalternité et de domination entre langues, cultures et nations. La lecture conjointe de cet article et de ce roman, jamais entreprise par la critique, a donc une triple ambition : aboutir à une interprétation originale du roman de Čapek, lu presque exclusivement comme un roman à thèse contre le capitalisme, le colonialisme, le militarisme et le nazisme ; esquisser un chapitre moins connu de l’histoire de la notion de littérature mondiale par le biais d’un auteur qui, tout en provenant d’un espace (semi) périphérique, a su s’imposer à l’attention internationale en finissant par devenir un classique de la science-fiction de même qu’un auteur de référence du modernisme européen ; enfin, souligner la nécessité d’étudier la littérature à l’âge de sa mondialisation à travers un « va-et-vient » entre distant et close reading. |

| Summary, etc. | After having discussed the various definitions of World Literature provided by Karel Čapek in the article “Jak se dělá světová literatura” ( “How to Make World Literature”), as well as the various ways in which minor literatures may achieve world-wide recognition, I turn the attention to Čapek’s most famous novel, Válka s mloky ( The War with the Newts). With this, I aim to demonstrate that the critical doxa on this classic of the European literary canon can be challenged by taking into account the unequal power-relations within the literary system. This joint reading of Čapek’s essay and novel—never undertaken by the critics—has three goals. The first is to provide a new interpretation of Capek’s novel: far from being exclusively a “thesis novel” against capitalism, militarism, and Nazism (as most of the critics affirm), The War with the Newts also thematizes the contemporary configuration of the hierarchical relationships between languages, cultures, and nations. In other words, it simultaneously reflects and contests the relationships between the centres and peripheries of the literary system to which it belongs. The second aim is to bring to light an unknown chapter of the history of the concept of World Literature through the lens of an author who, coming from a semi-peripheral space himself, nevertheless managed to attract international attention and become a reference for European modernism and science-fiction. Finally, I claim that, in order to properly understand World Literature, we need to link close and distant reading. |
