520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc.
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Two of the largest baronies in France, Sully and Craon, were placed in the hands of a sought-after heiress at the end of the xivth century, Marie de Sully. Having first been the fiancée of the eldest son of the Duke of Berry, she then married Guy VI de La Trémoille, the favorite of the Duke of Burgundy. Guy VI was, however, captured at Nicopolis, dying in captivity in 1397, and Marie de Sully would remarry Charles d’Albret, the first cousin of the king of France and a future constable. When she died in 1410, the custom of the time dictated that almost all of the value of the inheritance was to be bestowed upon the children of her first marriage, within the La Trémoille family. But the Dame de Sully, through repeated, recorded actions taken in the presence of notaries, had expressly disinherited them in favor of the children of her second marriage, within the Albret family. This article seeks to retrace the dispute between the two families, which lasted for around forty years, and which was grafted onto external conflicts: the civil war between the Albrets of Armagnac and the La Trémoille of Burgundy, then a dispute between the favorite of Charles VII, Georges de La Trémoille, and the sire of Albret, a supporter of the constable of Richemont. In light of these tribulations, the question arose about the feasibility, or not, of a great dame going against tradition and giving away her wealth in the manner she saw fit.
