Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | Le livre des haulx fais et vaillances de l’empereur Othovyen was completed in 1454 at the instigation of Jean V de Créquy. This collection seamlessly combines the prose reworkings of Florent et Octavien and Florence de Rome. It has not yet been published, however, it is currently in production. This contribution offers an interpretation of Othovyen in its historical and sociological context and considers the significance of battle narratives through an examination of the specific methods by which it was put into prose. The study takes a fresh look at the theme of single combat and group mêlées, which abound in the Burgundian romance: stylistic similarities are revealed between the description of combat scenes in Othovyen and those in a homogeneous corpus of texts produced in the court of Burgundy under the reign of Philip the Good, and more specifically in the entourage of Jean V de Créquy and Jean de Wavrin. The article also shows how the battle scenes contribute to meeting the literary desires of Philip the Good and his court, with their interest in feats of chivalrous prowess. |
