| Summary, etc. | Du Roman de Troie de Benoît de sainte Maure à ses mises en prose en français en passant par l’ Histoire ancienne jusqu’à César, le récit de la guerre de Troie constitue un laboratoire d’observation représentatif des choix esthétiques propres à chaque auteur. Cet article analyse la manière dont le chevalier normand Jean de Courcy, auteur d’une histoire universelle moralisée intitulée la Bouquechardière, se réapproprie à son tour le récit de la guerre de Troie à l’aube du xve siècle. Réduisant le récit des batailles collectives ou individuelles à des résumés composés de formules-types empruntées au style épique, Jean de Courcy propose une version démystifiée de la guerre et des faits de gloire de ses héros. L’auteur moraliste déplace ainsi l’attention du lecteur sur les conséquences de l’affrontement, insistant davantage sur le spectacle de la mort et sur les émotions qu’il suscite. Cette écriture moralisante engendre une lecture eschatologique destinée à éduquer et édifier le lecteur : la guerre est mise sur le compte de l’ignorance de Dieu et de la vraie religion par les hommes antiques. À travers l’histoire des civilisations et des personnages antiques exemplaires, ce sont donc les valeurs chrétiennes atemporelles nécessaires à la stabilité d’un royaume qui sont réaffirmées. |

| Summary, etc. | From Benoît de Sainte-Maure’s Le Roman de Troie to its French prose reworkings, via the Histoire ancienne jusqu’à César, the story of the Trojan War offers a laboratory in which we can observe the aesthetic choices made by each of the authors in question. This article analyzes the way in which the Norman knight Jean de Courcy, author of a moralizing universal history entitled La Bouquechardière, appropriates the story of the Trojan War at the dawn of the fifteenth century. By reducing the account of collective or individual battles to summaries made up of stock formulae borrowed from the epic style, Jean de Courcy presents a demystified version of the war and the glorious feats of its heroes. As a moralist, he redirects the reader’s attention toward the consequences of the conflict, emphasizing the spectacle of death and the emotions that it produces. This moralizing writing aims to educate and edify the reader and generates an eschatological reading: the war is explained by the ancients’ ignorance of God and of true religion. It therefore reaffirms, by means of the history of exemplary ancient civilizations and characters, the timeless Christian values that are necessary for the stability of a kingdom. |
