| Summary, etc. | É. Mâle supposait que la Danse Macabré parisienne avait une origine théâtrale sans pouvoir le prouver. La découverte récente d’un rôlet de théâtre à Chambéry ainsi que l’analyse d’une version latino-germanique se référant toutes les deux à une Danse macabre permettent de valider l’hypothèse de l’historien d’art du début du xxe siècle. Bien que l’origine de la Danse macabre nous soit connue par bribes, l’article émet des hypothèses, à caractère prospectif, de continuité thématique et d’évolution du sujet. Un scénario de déploiement du sujet macabre sous forme théâtrale, avant la réalisation d’œuvres picturales et donc avant la peinture murale du cimetière des Saints-Innocents en 1424–1425, est proposé dans cet article. Il permet de montrer les différentes influences qui ont pu s’exercer sur la peinture parisienne, aujourd’hui détruite mais qui nous est connue par les gravures du libraire et imprimeur Guyot Marchant, et de comprendre sa complexité dramatique, gage de succès de ce thème iconographique depuis le xve siècle jusqu’à nos jours. Le sujet croise les figures de la Mort allégorique, du cadavre et du revenant qui sont souvent difficiles à démêler. |

| Summary, etc. | É. Mâle assumed that the Danse Macabré had a theatrical origin without being able to prove it. The recent discovery of a medieval actors’ rôle in Chambéry and the analysis of a Latin-Germanic text, both referring to a Dance of Death, validate the hypothesis of the early-twentieth-century art historian. Despite the fragmentary knowledge regarding the origins of the Danse Macabre, this article shapes hypotheses about a thematic continuity and evolution of the genre. It puts forward a scenario of the Dance of Death performed as a play, prior to the creation of pictorial works, and thus before the mural in the Saints Innocents Cemetery was painted in 1424–1425 in Paris. This scenario shows the various influences that may have affected the Parisian painting, now destroyed but known to us through the engravings of bookseller and printer Guyot Marchant. It also allows one to understand the dramatic complexity which has made the success of this iconographic theme from the fifteenth century onwards. The subject discusses the figures of allegorical Death, corpse and revenant, often difficult to differentiate. |
