Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The French-influenced theme of the Nine Worthies and Nine Heroines spread in Italy in the fifteenth century, deeply modifying the memory of the classical tradition of the Illustrious Men. This new courtly allegory arrived in Italy through the Piedmont lands and combined the presentation of three Worthies with three Heroines as famous examples to follow. In particular, it meets the artistic touch of the nobility in the Alpine area, spreading further into Central Italy. In some cases, as in the Castle of Manta, one can see a strong contrast between the elegant images and the texts. The series can be seen as an expression of a processional dance performed by the nobility, the participants of which, in spite of their worldly power, express one by one the regret of the loss of their youth, much like in the European medieval macabre tradition. |
