Summary, etc. |
520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc. | The French Danse Macabré (Paris, 1424–1425), a key work in the spread of the Dance of Death genre, still lacks a critical edition. This article addresses the sixteen extant French manuscripts, the incunabula and the captioned mural paintings witnessing the Danse Macabré. The Catalan, Italian and Latin translations and reworkings of this text are also briefly discussed from a text-critical point of view. Our research focuses on the genealogical relations between the extant versions and shows that most fifteenth-century manuscripts derive directly from the archetype of the textual tradition, whereas all the incunabula were in some way influenced by the editio princeps (Guyot Marchant, 1485). The analysis of the substantive variants allows detecting the descripti and dividing the manuscripts into several families. |
