| Summary, etc. | Derrière ce qui relève à première vue d’un banal conflit d’interprétations, les critiques formulées par D. Barthélemy et surtout P. Henriet à l’adresse de la Nouvelle Histoire du Moyen Âge (éd. F. Mazel, Paris, 2022) laissent voir de sérieuses divergences en matière d’écriture de l’histoire, d’épistémologie, de conception de l’historiographie et de rapport à l’Église et son histoire. Le présent article entend leur répondre de manière vigoureuse et argumentée. Pour cela, il envisage d’abord les questions rédactionnelles et éditoriales, avant d’interroger la place du religieux dans l’histoire, les enjeux de terminologie et, plus longuement, l’historiographie de la réforme grégorienne dans ses multiples dimensions. Il se conclut par quelques considérations plus générales sur la périodisation du Moyen Âge, la question des paradigmes interprétatifs et le rapport aux savoirs hérités. |

| Summary, etc. | Behind what at first glance appears to be a banal conflict of interpretations, the criticisms leveled by D. Barthélemy and above all P. Henriet at the Nouvelle Histoire du Moyen Âge (edited by F. Mazel, Paris, 2022) reveal serious divergences in terms of historical writing, epistemology, conception of historiography, and relationship to the Church and its history. This article is a vigorous, well-argued response. It first considers editorial and publishing issues, before examining the place of religion in history, terminological issues and, at greater length, the historiography of the Gregorian reform in its many dimensions. It concludes with some more general considerations on the periodization of the Middle Ages, the question of interpretative paradigms, and the relationship with inherited knowledge. |
