Summary, etc. | Dans Artus de Bretagne, dont la première partie a été composée vers 1300, le héros porte un écu blanc ou échiqueté. L’article revient sur cette alternance ainsi que sur la paire constituée par l’écu et l’épée, deux éléments qui permettent de soutenir l’hypothèse d’une écriture en deux temps, la fin du roman étant une continuation allographe. Le motif du don des fées permet quant à lui d’éclairer la pratique intertextuelle à l’œuvre dans ce récit néo-arthurien. Malgré le caractère formulaire d’un certain nombre de mentions coordonnées, l’épée et l’écu ne constituent pas véritablement une paire : l’écu, dans la première partie du roman, vole la vedette à l’épée, pourtant distinguée par le nom de Clarence. Plus que l’épée, l’écu est associé à la lumière et à l’amour ; il trouve sa place dans les tableaux qui exaltent la cour et la chevalerie et en esthétisent les représentations, et contribue à construire Artus comme héros restaurateur de lumière ; de plus l’écu médiatise et met en image le corps à corps amoureux. Cependant le traitement de l’épée et de l’écu n’est pas uniforme tout au long du texte, la fin à partir du § 419 étant vraisemblablement une continuation allographe, qui a ajouté – maladroitement – l’échiqueté breton, et qui, plus épique que courtoise, rétablit la primauté de l’épée et rétrograde l’écu. |

Summary, etc. | In Artus de Bretagne, the first part of which was written around 1300, the hero wears a white or chequered shield. The article looks at this alternation and the pairing of the shield and sword, two elements that support the hypothesis of a two-stage writing process, with the end of the romance being an allographic continuation. The motif of the gift of the fairies sheds light on the intertextual practice at work in this neo-Arthurian narrative. Despite the topical formulation of coordinated references, the sword and the shield do not really form a pair: in the first part of the romance, the shield is more important than the sword, even though it is distinguished by the name Clarence. More than the sword, the shield is associated with light and love; it finds its place in descriptions exalting court and chivalry aestheticises their representations, and helps to construct Artus as the hero who restores light; the shield plays an important role in the love story of Artus and Florence. However, the treatment of the sword and the shield is not uniform throughout the text, the end from § 419 probably being an allographic continuation, which has added – clumsily – the Breton escutcheon, and which, more epic than courtly, re-establishes the primacy of the sword and demotes the shield. |
