| Summary, etc. | In the last few years, the study of the monastic reforms of the late Middle Ages has undergone a number of rich and varied new developments. As far as the Benedictine world is concerned, much of the emphasis has been on the textual sources. This article takes a historiographical perspective on the works of art produced in the context of the Benedictine reforms in the Southern Low Countries. It examines how they have been studied (or not) as objects that illuminate and help us to understand the many aspects of these reform processes. Many Benedictine reformers, such as Jacques Coëne or Guillaume de Bruxelles, have been brought to light, and their patronage has been well studied, but the role of the artworks they commissioned in their reform activities has not yet been investigated. These lines of research will undoubtedly allow us to take a new look at these objects and enrich our understanding of the reform movements in the Benedictine monasteries of the Southern Low Countries at the end of the Middle Ages. |

| Summary, etc. | Ces dernières années, la recherche sur les réformes monastiques de la fin du Moyen Âge a connu de multiples développements, riches et variés. En ce qui concerne le milieux bénédictin, l’accent a surtout été mis sur les sources textuelles. Cet article se penche – sous l’angle du bilan historiographique – sur les œuvres d’art produites dans le contexte des réformes bénédictines des anciens Pays-Bas et explore comment elles ont été étudiées (ou pas) en tant qu’objets permettant d’éclairer et comprendre les multiples facettes de ces processus réformateurs. De nombreuses figures bénédictines réformatrices, comme Jacques Coëne ou Guillaume de Bruxelles, ont été mises en lumière et leurs mécénats bien étudiés, mais le rôle joué dans leurs actions réformatrices par les œuvres qu’ils ont commandées reste encore à étudier. Il s’agit là de pistes de recherche qui permettront sans aucun doute de jeter un regard nouveau sur ces objets et d’enrichir notre compréhension des mouvements de réforme dans les monastères bénédictins des anciens Pays-Bas à la fin du Moyen Âge. |
