| Summary, etc. | Le dialogue qui suit est fictif. Si une brève correspondance entre Reichenbach et De Finetti est attestée, aucune trace d’un dialogue direct ne nous est parvenue. Mais plusieurs circonstances ont pu occasionner leur rencontre, comme leur présence au Congrès International de Philosophie Scientifique en 1935 à Paris, ou leur nouvelle présence commune à Paris en juin 1937. Nous prenons appui sur cette hypothèse d’une rencontre parisienne pour imaginer un dialogue éclairant leur différence d’approche philosophique des probabilités. Alors que Reichenbach défendait une interprétation des probabilités basée uniquement sur des fréquences d’événements, De Finetti était pour sa part un avocat de l’interprétation « subjective ». Nous ne prenons pas explicitement parti entre eux mais explorons les présupposés de leurs conceptions. |

| Summary, etc. | The body of this essay is composed of a fictitious dialogue between Reichenbach and De Finetti. If it is true that these these two philosophers entered into a limited correspondence, there is no evidence a direct conversation ever took place between them. And yet, several historical facts do point to the possibility of an actual meeting; in 1935, they both attended the International Congress of Scientific Philosophy in Paris, and, in June 1937, they were both living in Paris. Relying on the possibility of this encounter as a pure hypothetical, the following imagined dialogue demonstrates the differences between their philosophical approaches to probability theory. Whereas Reichenbach defended an interpretation of probability strictly based on event-frequency, De Finetti was an advocate of the so-called subjective interpretation. This paper does not take sides in this debate, but rather explores the presuppositions of their respective conceptions. |
